Snack N Stack

Project Prompt

Snack N Stack is a multifunctional furniture solution designed to bring together dining and entertainment in a single space-saving product. Created as my Industrial Design Capstone project at RIT, the table transforms seamlessly between an everyday dining table and a dedicated poker table, addressing the needs of users who enjoy hosting game nights but have limited living space. Through user research, concept development, prototyping, and CAD modeling, the project explores how thoughtful design can enhance social experiences while maximizing functionality within the modern home.

Ideation

Design Rationale

This concept was selected as the final direction because it provided the most intuitive transition between dining and gaming modes while maintaining a clean and balanced form. The circular shape encourages social interaction among players, and the removable magnetic tabletop offers a simple, user-friendly transformation process. Compared to the other concepts, it also reduced mechanical complexity, improved stability, and was easier to manufacture, making it the strongest overall solution for Snack N Stack.

Process

It all started with a large sheet of pine wood and a clear vision. Using a CNC router, each component was cut with precision, ensuring consistency across every part of the build. The fluted dowel base was one of the most labor-intensive steps individual wooden strips were layered one by one around a cylindrical frame, gradually forming the ribbed texture that defines the table's aesthetic. The circular tabletop was constructed in layers, with an inner support ring engineered to carry the weight of the flip mechanism and outer apron. Recesses were carefully routed into the apron to integrate the sliding storage drawers and built-in coaster spots, details that went through several iterations before sitting just right. Once the structure passed stability testing, the entire piece was sanded, stained with an aged walnut finish, and wrapped in teal felt along the apron. The reversible center top was finished in wood on one side and lined with green felt on the other the final detail that brings the dual-mode concept fully to life. The result is a table that transitions seamlessly between a dining surface and a poker setup with a simple flip, with storage for cards, chips, and utensils thoughtfully built in functional, considered, and designed to earn its place in any room.
